Rubber Roof Gravel Stop

It features an angled bend at the top known as the gravel stop. This type of edge metal is designed for installation on flat rubber roofs with gravel. Because the gravel holds and releases heat the layer of gravel on a bur flat roof can both help water evaporate and keep heat away from the underlying roof structure. The gravel stop provides an architectural visually attractive termination with a canted edge.

The gravel provides a better grip for foot traffic when conducting maintenance or repairs. Once the flashing is in place the roof is ready to face the elements. As gravel cannot protect tarpaper surfaces where they rise vertically from the roof such as on parapet walls or upstands the felts are usually coated with bitumen and protected by sheet metal flashings called gravel stops. The gravel stop system includes a continuous 22 ga steel cleat with roof flange for easier installation and proper location and is pre punched with slotted fastener holes.

The gravel stop terminates the roofing preventing water from running underneath the roofing and preventing the gravel surfacing from washing off in heavy rains. Gravel stop is offered in a wide variety of materials gauges and colors. The off the rack alternative to custom flashing is a galvanized drip edge specially made for flat roofs. These systems are designed to protect the structure from damage due to water penetration while offering superior wind uplift resistance.

Roof gravel stops are used at the roof termination on the perimeter of a structure for a variety of roof types such as epdm singly ply thermoplastic modified bitumen and built up roofing systems. The gravel stop edge flashing was nailed on top of rather than below the rubber roof material in order to allow the rubber to be lapped over the roof edge and extended an inch into the gutters not shown which was not a bad idea though the roof s success then depends on the seam sealing tape not yet installed here to prevent leaks at the flashing nails.
