If left unattended the decaying structures will break and in co ordination with the stability system the rest of the building will soon fall apart as well ultimately leading. If you have a stone base and make your loot room out of metal walls other players will know where it is so you should rather make your whole base metal or make parts of the base metal to not make it obvious where your loot is hidden.
