Its use does not require wall sheathing and will add structural strength to your shed walls. The building paper is so old that it is crumbling. T1 11 panels do not come pre primed and the texture is somewhat on the rough side. There wasn t a lick of sheathing anywhere. And either way you should use a barrier like tarpaper or tyvek underneath it. This older building has horizontal shiplap siding without any sheathing.

Myself i would not consider using the siding without sheathing but that s your decision. T1 11 comes in 4 x8 panels and has channels running vertically about every 8. Another common type of vertical shed siding is t1 11 exterior siding. Or do you always need sheathing when doing hardie lap siding regardless.

They are each right in a way. The old siding is old and pithy. I m do a re clad of a wood framed building. In older roughly pre 1940 homes it was not unusual to put the siding directly against the studs.

Exterior wall sheathing strengthens the wall system provides a nailing base for the siding and gives a layer of protection against outside elements. When nailing siding you ve got to know where the studs are. You can put hardi directly on studs without sheathing but you need to use let in bracing to give structural rigidity to the walls. Vinyl siding can be installed over common wood sheathings such as plywood oriented strand board osb or other materials e g foam plastic insulating sheathing.

Siding should be nailed into studs at maximum 24 61cm centers when applied over wood based solid sheathing and 16 41cm on center when applied without sheathing. No diagonal bracing visible from the outside either. As part of the rehab work the studs were beefed up with new vertical lumber strips to accommodate more insulation. Not a proud day.

Exterior wall sheathing is either structural or non structural. My question is can i install that wrap over the 2x4 s. In those areas where an air space between siding and sheathing is desired nail siding to furring strips. The thickness of wood sheathing counts toward the total thickness that the fasteners must penetrate into nailable material usually 1 1 4 32mm.
